Building on my experience of running the FSE Outreach Program in the WordPress community, I’ve started exploring ways I can use WordPress Playground aka WordPress in a browser to bring the future of WordPress to folks. For now, it’ll take the form of a one-click setup of a site preloaded with a specific feature. For example, I’m currently playing with setting up one for Data Views, a new feature planned for WordPress 6.5 that kicks off aspects of redesigning the WordPress admin in an iterative and contained way just within the Site Editor:
While I can share videos like the one above to help folks get an idea of what’s in progress, I also think that “seeing is believing” and there’s something absolutely magical about playing with something in progress. This is where WordPress Playground comes in and, in some cases like the above, I can even create an exact link that will open to where this experimental work will be done, without needing to describe any steps to take to get there. I have an issue open for adding more deep links to other aspects of the Site Editor to ensure this ease going forward.
Going a step further, one can imagine having these kinds of ready made examples available built into documentation. It’s something a crew is working on with some developer docs for curating parts of the editing experience that will both share code for how to accomplish something and allow you to click a link to create an instance of that particular method/approach.
This all brings me to this question: What parts of WordPress would you like to explore more if you could? Perhaps you aren’t using a feature on your own site but you still want a quick way to see how it works or you want to better understand if an upcoming feature might solve a problem you have today. I want to create those examples and use them both as a vehicle for increasing feedback pathways and excitement/awareness building. Right now, it can be cumbersome to do so or it requires too much insider knowledge to quickly find what work is ready to be explored. On my mind for now as it relates to WordPress 6.5:
Requests are welcome for upcoming items and even for things that have already been shipped but you want to learn more about. I can’t promise I’ll do all of them, but I want to test the WordPress Playground to see what we can do to make the work that’s happening available for people to explore features faster than ever. This is all being done in the hope of getting more timely and robust feedback in return.
